eBay fees explained
When an item sells, eBay takes one final value fee: 13.6% of the total amount of the sale in most categories, plus $0.40 an order ($0.30 when the order is $10.00 or less). The word that costs sellers money is “total”: it includes the shipping the buyer pays and the buyer’s sales tax.
Work out your own sale on the eBay fee calculator
In eBay’s own words
The total amount of the sale includes the item price, any handling charges, any shipping costs collected from the buyer (some exceptions apply), sales tax, and any other applicable fees.
We charge one final value fee when your item sells, and you don't have to worry about third-party payment processing fees. This fee is calculated as a percentage of the total amount of the sale, plus a per order fee. For orders $10.00 or less the per order fee is $0.30, for orders over $10.00 the per order fee is $0.40.
The fee on the buyer’s sales tax
Sell something for $87.00 with free shipping. The buyer pays sales tax on top; at 7.53%, the US average (State and Local Sales Tax Rates, Midyear 2026 ↗), that is $6.55. eBay’s fee is worked out on all of it:
| Item price | $87.00 |
|---|---|
| Buyer’s sales tax (7.53%) | $6.55 |
| Total amount of the sale | $93.55 |
| Final value fee (13.6% of the total) | $12.72 |
| Per-order fee | $0.40 |
| eBay takes | $13.12 |
| You keep | $73.88 |
If eBay charged only on the price, its fees would be $12.23. The fee on the tax costs you $0.89 on this sale. A calculator that leaves it out shows more than eBay pays you.
Shipping is counted too
The shipping the buyer pays is part of the total, so eBay takes its fee on that as well. Moving the shipping into the price changes nothing: a sale of $87.00 plus $10.00 shipping pays $14.58 in fees, and the same item at $97.00 with free shipping pays $14.58. What you pay for the label is yours to cover either way.
Small sales pay the most, as a share
The per-order fee is the same on a small sale as on a big one, so it takes a bigger share of a small price:
| Sold for | eBay takes | Share |
|---|---|---|
| $5.00 | $1.03 | 20.6% |
| $15.00 | $2.59 | 17.3% |
| $87.00 | $13.12 | 15.1% |
| $200.00 | $29.65 | 14.8% |
Each with free shipping and the buyer’s sales tax at 7.53%; the share is of the price.
Categories with a rate of their own
Most categories pay 13.6% up to $7,500, then 2.35% on the rest. These pay their own rate on the total amount of the sale, without an eBay store. A rate “at … or less” or “above” is charged on the whole total; “up to … then” charges each part its own rate.
| Category | Final value fee |
|---|---|
| Most categories | 13.6% up to $7,500, then 2.35% on the rest |
| Books, movies & TV, music | 15.3% up to $7,500, then 2.35% on the rest |
| Coins & paper money | 13.25% up to $7,500, then 2.35% on the rest |
| Bullion | 13.6% at $7,500 or less, 7% above $7,500 |
| Women’s bags & handbags | 15% at $2,000 or less, 9% above $2,000 |
| Trading cards, comics & card games | 13.25% up to $7,500, then 2.35% on the rest |
| Jewelry | 15% at $5,000 or less, 9% above $5,000 |
| Watches, parts & accessories | 15% up to $1,000, 6.5% from $1,000 to $7,500, then 3% on the rest |
| NFTs | 5% |
| Heavy equipment, printing presses, food trucks | 3% up to $15,000, then 0.5% on the rest |
| Guitars & basses | 6.7% up to $7,500, then 2.35% on the rest |
| Athletic shoes | 13.6% under $150, 8% from $150, no per-order fee |
With a Basic, Premium, Anchor or Enterprise store, eBay uses another table: “All other categories” pays 12.7% up to $2,500, then 2.35% on the rest. The store fees page ↗ lists every category, and the calculator’s Advanced options hold them all.
The extras some sales pay
- Promoted Listings: you choose an ad rate from 2% to 100%, charged on the total amount of the sale when the item sells after a click on its ad.
- A buyer outside the US: 1.65% more, unless you ship with eBay International Shipping.
- Currency conversion: 3.25%, only when eBay converts your money: an item listed or sold on another eBay site (eBay.de, eBay.co.uk …). A dollar sale on ebay.com is not converted. On 14 Oct 2026, eBay changed its currency conversion charge (sellers registered in the US) from 3% to 3.25%.
- Below Standard: 6% more of the total (7% after four months).
- Very High “item not as described” returns: 5% more (6% after four months), not on top of Below Standard.
Check every number
Every fee here is read on eBay’s own pages, and the calculator quotes them word for word:
When eBay changes a fee, Fees changed gets a dated entry, and this guide changes with it: its numbers are read from the same data as the calculator’s.
